Camera on light stand?

Will a light stand be strong enough to hold a camera without falling over? I was thinking of attaching a 5'extension pole to a 12' stand to use as a camera mast for aerial shots. Any advice?

Sounds pretty risky to me. I wouldn't do it.

Depends on a lot of things: camera weight, how the pole is extended, etc... Put sandbags on the stand, or secure it some other way, to keep it from falling over. Or put the extension pole on a tripod.

Provided you are holding the stand at the base, or securing it with sandbags, you're probably safe. Windy conditions are probably worth avoiding, though.

I would opt for a monopod and remote shutter release with you holding the Monopod. The light stand sounds VERY risky.
Use might be able to strap the monopod to a pole (very securely) to get the extra height. Raising and lowering require lots of care.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

I am more worried about the actual structure holding, like the height adjustment clasps or whatever it may have. I wouldn't let go of it or anything. I was planning on just mounting the camera and setting the widest focal length with a decent DOF considering this wouldn't be used for isolating subjects, more for panoramic type shots. Raise the stand, and while holding it just for extra security I could use my wireless release to snap pictures with my free hand. I like the idea of sand bags though.

Depends on the stand, doesn't it? These would hold most cameras:
