Are warranties over rated? Really needed?

I have a friend who is flying over to Japan Aug 2nd and I've been thinking about getting some new gear. From what I understand if I give him the money for all the camera gear I want him to purchase in Japan, the savings would be considerate. The downside is of course, there would be no warranty. But then again, when was the last time I needed a warranty? What about people in countries other than USA, what warranty are they getting?

So I'm thinking I should take the savings and apply it to more gear. What do you think?

Just answered a post from another thread about why you might need a USA warranty - suggest you consider that you might run into a situation where it might be valuable. Read the thread about the camera dropped in the sand

I wouldn't risk it. When you spend serious money on something that could break, personally I want that peace of mind. Then again perhaps as Americans we are spoiled. So do any other countries have warranties? Like if you bought a camera in UK, do you get a warranty there?

Personally, I wouldn't spend the kind of money modern gear costs and not have a warranty. Its one of the main reasons I pay a little more and buy new. It has saved me some serious cash a couple of times on covered repairs.............B)

Why so serious?
