If you were given $5000 to spend on photography equipment what would you buy?

Would you blow it on some awesome camera body or a coupe killer lenses? Or would you have a list of smalller items you would buy?

I'm looking at some camera goodie stores and my wish list, oh and then my wallet and what the wife approves for my toy spending! :S Then I started to think if I had a spare $5000 grand what would I spend it on.

I have a pretty good camera right now that I'm happy with (Nikon D300), but with $5000 in pocket I would either buy a new D700 and most likely a new lens OR I would pick up a 200-400mm f4!

How about you? What would you pick up for $5000?

Easy - Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens

It's a tad over, but I would take that additional cost out of my pocket also.

Price and features. Basically speaking the AF (auto focus) system, construction and IQ is better. There are a bunch of other features the D300 has that the D3100 doesn't have too... Google is your friend. :)

As for the $5000 question...

Well...
Nikon 14-24 2.8
Sigma 85 1.4
Nikon 105 VR micro
Nikon 300 f/4

That would be all the lenses I want for now out of the way. If I had any money left over I'd grab a 2nd hand D300 just for telephoto stuff.

In reality though, I'd keep the money to buy a D4 when it comes out. ;)

You mind me asking why a D300 for telephoto stuff?

Because I own a D3s for everything else. A D3s is a Full Frame camera, meaning each shot is a little wider. A D300 is a crop camera, so for a given focal length it will give me x1.5 the length of the lens. So a 100mm lens will be a 150mm FF equivalent on a D300. Make sense? SO when using telephoto I have more reach. :) The noise on a crop camera is worse, but I'd use it outdoors during the day anyway, so it should be fine. (I'm actually waiting for the D400 to come out to be honest).

I'd choose a D300 because there aren't enough improvements included in the D300s that I don't already have in spades with the D3s.

The AF system is as good as, if not better than the D7000 and the body size fits in my hand better than the D7000 (I've tried both out).

I would go with a

14-24mm f2.8
85mm f1.4
300mm f2.8 would be great but would, would kill the $5,000 budget
SB900 flash

Nikon D7000. I know I could buy a bigger camera, but I'm not sure if I really want the best.. like the Nikon D3x. I never thought about which higher end camera I want, since I know in real life, I can not afford it.
A good 70-300mm range with 2x teleconverter. (this would mainly be in times when I don't want to use the tripod or hold up a 6lb 50-500mm lens)
fisheye lens
10-24mm
200mm macro lens

I've had both of those and sold them. Funny thing is, I wouldn't mind another mark 2 camera, just for dedicated macro.
