Photographer job in maternity ward in hospital

12 years 8 months ago #131136 by Gene.Culley
I was just thinking, not sure if there is companies do this already or freelance photographers. My wife's friend gave me this idea. She was telling me that newborn photos are always very "point and shoot" looking. That I should try to get in with the local hospital and taking photos of newborns.

Have any of you tried doing this? How did you work your pricing? Any tips you can pass on?

Not quite but nearly, there is a charity in the UK that specialise with volunteers of shooting still born babies which is something that is quite popular for the grieving families to have a keepsake of the little ones who unfortuantely didn't make it...

I was so close as I have a friend who lost their baby when it was two days old and would have loved a photo but just couldn't bring myself to do the job...

NissanMan, there is a group of photographers that do that work called NILMDTS (Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep). I know of it because some of my former students are members. I wouldn't be able to do it either.

To the OP, you could leave a card and samples for the new moms. If they don't have a friend with a camera or want a pro instead, they might call.

A story on baby photography (I have many photo stories):

Most of you are aware of Aaron Bros. art supplies, probably for their 1¢ frame sale. One of the brothers, Leonardo, is a friend of mine. They sold their business to Michaels years ago, but they kept the name.

He started out as a baby photographer -- going house to house. After he made prints, he would show them to the mom, and ask her to buy a set. If she din't he would rip them up in front of her.

She would buy the next one she saw.
