Can someone tell me why the rule of thirds is fact?

So what makes the rule of thirds a foundation in photography? Is there any real mathematical concrete data that supports this claim other than it looks better from a visual stand point?

I think it is mainly aesthetics and images tend to be more pleasing to the eye although all rules are meant to be broken and this is no exception :)

It's not a fact. It's an exercise to get beginners to stop centering everything. Eventually they are expected to move on to more intuitive composing.

There have been numerous studies on famous works of art, and the results show that the rule of thirds, the golden mean, particular aspect ratios, etc... have no more bearing on the real world than astrology.

"When subject matter is forced to fit into preconceived patterns, there can be no freshness of vision. Following rules of composition can only lead to a tedious repetition of pictorial cliches." -Edward Weston

:agree:
The way you need to look at the rules is they are teachers of good composition. After you have learned the lessons you can then breaks the rules.

If I remember correctly (don't hold me to this) I read something where the rule of thirds/golden ratio based on mathematics??? That everything in nature follows it???? Not saying it shouldn't be broken at times.

OK, so maybe I am losing my mind.

Exactly! That is the root of my question, I remember seeing something where there were claims that mathematically this all worked? I'd like to see this formula. B)

Common photo aspect ratios would be 1:1, 2:3, 4:5, 5:7, etc... Divide those into thirds and the math is different in each case.

Fibonacci numbers/sequences are commonly found in nature. See the link below for some examples. At the bottom of the page is a link to another page discussing plenty of examples in nature where it does not apply.

www.fibonacci.name/Nature.html

While these concepts can be applied to art, and they may appear quite attractive, just like in nature it would be easy to compile a very long list of successful artworks where it was not applied.
