Should it be seen as the Photoshop Master or Master with the Camera?

I posted a thread yesterday about my Photoshop skills being an area where I need to improve. Especially with regards to my new wedding and portrait business. I was just thinking if someone takes a master photograph, they get recognized as being a great photographer. So what happens when a "ok" photographer takes a "ok" photo, but because he is a master with Photoshop he turns that "ok" photo into a diamond. So should this "ok" photographer be seen as a master photographer, because when you think about it, he or she is getting recognized for the finished photo, not the work he put into it with Photoshop. Or should that person be recognized as being a "ok" photographer, and master with Photoshop.

Just a thought before I head off to deep sea fishing today, if my buddy ever get's here to pick me up! Anyone else heading to Long Beach for their 3/4 off shore fishing today?

Tricky question, if the person is to branded as one or the other, then my vote is master photographer. A good photographer will use all resources to create a great photo.

Post processing is part of the package, its required when doing digital photography. Labels mean nothing to me anyway.....B)

Why so serious?

If someone did a straight print from some of ansel Adams negatives, you would see your answer. He spent hours and hours trying different techniques on his prints. The finished image is all that matters. The tools change over time.

Well said however, I still try to shoot with my end result in mind. Having less to do in post-processing.

A photo is more than just a picture. It is a moment captured in time.

I think an ok photographer is going do ok photos and a master photographer is going to do excellent photos - it's the overall ability and work put into it. You can only photoshop it so much before it's obvious it's been 'doctored up'.

DIgital is just a different way to do the same thing I've done in the darkroom. It's a lot easier if you get a good photo to start with. Most of the time I just had to make a slight adjustment in the exposure time or burn in a corner, but occasionally I had a photo that took a lot of adjustments to exposure time and dodging and burning to get the print I wanted.

I think photoshop makes people think they can fix it later so they don't bother w/framing it well or getting a good exposure. But unless you're going for some special effects and doing more of a photo illustration I don't think you can photoshop a bad photo into a fabulous one. I doubt that being a lousy photographer and a master photoshopper will get anyone very far (or at least in time it will become obvious they don't know how to take a good photo).

Perhaps you should try a different program for Post Processing. Say something like Lightroom or PS Elements. They are much simpler to use over the full versions of PS/CS. Also you need to try and get it as right as possible in camera, this way your PP is merely minor adjustments.

I'm going to say master photographer. I like the statement that was said about photographers using all resources to make a great shot, including Photoshop.
