Geo tagging photos with locational data and EXIF

12 years 8 months ago #139576 by Conner
I want my photos to be geo tagged now. When set up, does this information just show up in the EXIF data? How pin point are these coordinates? Meaning if I go on a hike and took a cool macro shot of mold growing on a rock. A year later if I want to come back to that exact spot will the coordinates bring me there or is it like a 50 feet radius deal?

What additional equipment is needed? I have a Canon 40D. Please let me know total gear needed and if you happen to know if there is a subscription required?

The satellites were put up for military use, and later we civilians were allowed to use them. I think they have a bit more precision than they share with us, but you should be able to get to within a meter or so of the original (if the device you use is working properly). No subscription necessary.

There are many GPS tools you can use:

And yes, it shows up in the EXIF. A lot of modern apps are taking advantage of it, like iPhoto.

HTH :)

I have a two-year old JOBO GPS unit for my Canons. It fits on the hot shoe and records the coordinates of the shot by time. Back at the desk, I copy the photos to a single file and plug in the GPS. The software "matches" the photos and the locations. You can choose to apply all or selectively. The location is then added to the metadata (EXIF). It can show up on Google Earth if you want. Found it to be very accurate.

One unit, free updates to software and no subscriptions.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.
