Is photography an art form?

Good art gives the viewer a different perspective on an ordinary subject. If it's a ho-hum photo that you're going to forget 10 seconds after you turn away, it probably isn't in the ART category. But if it stays with you, in your mind for hours, days or years on end - then that's ART.

Photography then is non-art and art. Depends on the photographer. So I would have asked the question "is a photographer an artist?" Not "is photography art?"

I disagree actually. I think becoming a good painter/musician/chef takes a lot more time and effort.

That said all (including photography) are life long pursuits and you keep getting slowly better.

I agree. Photography can be simply recordkeeping and it can be great art and lots of steps in between. But is the photographer an artist or merely a craftsman laboring at his profession?

I don't imagine there really is a definitive answer to these questions. But I'll vote for art and artist.

I disagree. It's the same concept.

I think some things come naturally to certain people and not to others. I think the "majority" of really good artists are born with it and comes naturally, quickly, and w/little effort. The other minority of good artists work really really hard at becoming good. This can be said for other skills and talents in life as well.
