Question about working directly for a magazine

12 years 6 months ago #154392 by Kenya See
I did search and didn't see this asked. Do magazine's have photographers working directly for them, or are they all freelance photographers?

In the event that they do have their own photographers, any chance would you know if magazines allow interns on the photography side of things? Have you heard of magazines doing that?

I really appreciate your help.

You might look at the page that lists the publisher etc. and see what info.is given related to photography. Maybe noticing the photo credits would give you an idea if they have their own photographers or freelance or both. I don't know if they accept interns or not.

The only one I know much about offhand is The Hockey News (and unless you're interested in covering sports that may not help much!) but they get most of their photos from the agency that provides images for the NHL. But sometimes if there's an article about an up-and-coming player for example and they publish a photo of a player in juniors the photo is probably from a team photographer or freelancer.

Never even thought to consider that. Not much of a sports gal, but I do enjoy fashion and gossip stuff  I always toss my magazines after I read them. So tomorrow at supermarket going to get some new ones.

Would be nice to be able to get foot into door with magazine, but I have to wonder how many others are trying to do the same.

Is there a local magazine where you live? The city near me has a couple that are local and something like that might be a good starting point - I know a couple of photographers who have been able to get their photos published in either a local mag or newspaper, esp. for coverage of special events. If you're into fashion and commerical photography, besides checking out some magazines you could take a look at PDN (Photo District News), that has a lot about commercial and advertising photos. (Sometimes they have features related to fashion but doesn't look like the current issue does.)

I believe it's a mixture of both, but every magazine is probably different. Some have staff photographers. Some only hire freelance photographers, but they work with those same freelance photographers all the time.
