Infrared photography

I see so many on this site are doing infrared shooting. I really like it and would like to try it myself. How is it done? Do I have to buy a camera specifically for infrared?

For digital it is tough. Digitals have a built in IR filter. A friend in Canada bought a used Canon XT and sent it off to be modified (about $500). Works great as a dedicated IR camera.
Some things were easier with film

There is a guy here who has some awesome IR photos, let me find them. I had asked the same question and it is a pretty pricey to modify your DSLR from what I was told.

If you're looking for a digital camera specifically for IRwork, you'll have to buy used. the 2002-vintage Minolta Dimage 7 or 1999-vintage cameras like the Olympus C-20020-Z, the Nikon CoolPix 950 or the Nikon D1 are all good bets.

Try a Hoya R72. it may be a little more red than the Wratten, but it gives great results.

That's true, I've used the Hoya, but I'll stick with the Wratten. They're about 3x the cost of the Hoyas but they provide greater contracts and nearly pure grayscale output on most digital cameras, so I think the infrared results are much better.

The site sells a Canon P&S modified for IR for $200.
