As you are shooting penguins in snow and ice - and you are shooting RAW - you are going to have to adjust the white balance. If you try shooting RAW + jpeg, you can custom set the white balance and bump the exposure +1 to see what the camera's processor would do to the colors.
Here is a little experiment using the different white balance settings on a Canon XSi.

With RAW, YOU are going to have to make the adjustments.
If you are shooting in snow or ice that does make a big difference. I keep forgetting about needing to over expose for snow, as the camera does turn the snow gray, so I need to make it white. All these little things we forget about until it becomes 2nd nature.
