I think perhaps it's something to do with the post production process. What camera are you currently using?

My only guess is post processing. But I am also going to take a wild guess (which is probably incorrect, but god only knows) is because some photos are shot with film, others are shot with digital. Two different cameras, reading two different settings.

I am assuming that the reference to film is a language issue since the 5D is digital.
As you are shooting penguins in snow and ice - and you are shooting RAW - you are going to have to adjust the white balance. If you try shooting RAW + jpeg, you can custom set the white balance and bump the exposure +1 to see what the camera's processor would do to the colors.

Here is a little experiment using the different white balance settings on my old Canon XT. The day was cloudy so the Auto got it about right. I did NOT adjust exposure on this series.

With RAW, YOU are going to have to make the adjustments.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

:agree: If you are shooting in snow or ice that does make a big difference. I keep forgetting about needing to over expose for snow, as the camera does turn the snow gray, so I need to make it white. All these little things we forget about until it becomes 2nd nature.
