I noticed like another person who I just saw making a post about a 300mm lens, I'm on the fence. I want a 300mm lens, and have noticed I can save a nice chunk of change by getting the f/4, however I keep wondering if that f/4 will come short where the f/2.8 would be needed.

From a quality and quantity of internal glass elements is the f/2.8 different? I'm looking to get more focal distance for nature photos and if I ever get around to more macro shots, I'm thinking this lens would come in handy also.

During day light I'm thinking that f/4 would be really nice. How about during bright sunlight, would there be any picture quality difference?

I have the F4 lens and use it for hockey indoors where the 2.8 lens would offer 1 more stop of speed and find the f4 lens very adequate. Shooting outdoors the 2.8 offers a higher shutter speed (great for fast action sports like lacrosse) and I have used the 2.8 for baseball and lacrosse. My f4 is lighter and therefore easier to use over the course of a long day in the field .

Both of these pix were taken with the Nikon 300mm f4 lens

F4 will do you well in the day time. If you could go for a f2.8 i would spring for it. Reason being it offers you the versatility of going to f2.8. An f4 lens could never be f2.8 but a f2.8 can be f4

Really depends on how much you're going to use it inside.

For me the PRICE of the 2.8 wouldn't be worth it because I can just boost the ISO to 12800 if I need to (D3s). ;)

But you own the 2.8 ;):judge:

Not by a long shot....Yeah, you could get a Canon 500d Dual Diopter lens (or any of a number of other ones) and screw it on to get closer, but the IQ won't come close to a dedicated macro lens...
