Do you believe compact cameras will take over DSLRs?

No compact camera can give the degree of control and scope for creativity that a DSLR provides. I like to have as much control as possible, it'll always be DSLR's for me.

There is no black & white; it's all 18% grey.

Ironic considering that switching to an SLR from what came before it required the photographer to give up control (lens movements) and image quality (much smaller film) in exchange for convenience.

I wouldn't be holding my breath for that day. IMHO as a professional, people will take you more seriously with a camera that looks like a camera. Imagine showing up at a wedding shoot with a compact sized camera? They would laugh at you.

Well it wasnt just convenience it was a case utility as well for film. It was like the difference between my Pentax 645 and my Crown one could say the Pentax robbed steps and control from the other as well, but both were for set shots as where an SLR was for everything and everywhere shots.
Now as for the compacts affecting Dslrs they may or actually will on the lower end or entry level, but on the Prosumer/Pro end no. I have never liked small cameras myself they feel like toys. They may drop the mirror but the body designs will stay pretty much the same on the upper end.

With a sensor that size (1.85 crop) the apparent DOF won't be really noticeable at 2.8. Besides it's a GX 1 has a f/2.8 - 5.8 lens. When you zoom in you lose the wide aperture and any DSLR level blurring abilities. What you really need is something like the Sony NEX with a APS-C (1.5 crop) sensor and a 1.8 or faster lens. That'll do it.
