Shutter actuations

Just looked at my shutter count on one of the last shots I took. Just under 15K on my Nikon D70s, which I bought new back in Fall 2005. I'm still old school in the fact that I plan out my shots. I rarely use continuous shutter release function & while many people think it doesn't cost anything for the shots since there are no film or print costs involved, your shutter does have a limited life expectancy...But, to each their own....

I don't know what the D70s is rated for, but I found this page interesting:

It seems to me you can probably expect your shutter to work well into the 4th or 5th decade of this century at your current rate of use. Will the rest of the camera be functional that long? Even if it still works in 2050, will you care? Or will you have moved on to a better sensor?

I'm not knocking you for planning out your shots and shooting carefully. I think that there are important aesthetic reasons to take pictures that way. But I don' t think saving the shutter is a particularly important consideration.

Just my opinion, of course.

My thinking is somewhat like Matt's. I would just once like to wear out a shutter before my camera goes obsolete......

Why so serious?

I used my first DSLR, a Canon 20D, hard both on the job and for personal work. It never failed on the job, but one day long after it had been replaced I picked it up, took a test shot, and the shutter failed. But it's shutter wasn't as tough as the shutters that came after. According to the database Matt linked above they tend to die at about 60K. The cameras that came right after tend to get 100K+, and the cameras I'm using today average 500K+ before failing. I've used my back-up 5D pretty hard, and had started to wonder if I had anything to worry about the shutter, but then I dropped it. DOH! In the repair I got a new shutter so I guess the odometer on that camera got rolled back to 000,000.

I never thought I'd use continuous shooting, but I have learned that it's helpful in some situations. I don't shoot a lot of action like sports or wildlife. It's handy with kids and musicians who aren't necessarily cooperating with me. I don't put the hammer down, and faster than 3 or 4 fps is wasted on me, but I like a 3 shot burst if I'm shooting hand held in low light without flash. The second or third shot can show less camera shake than the first.

I think it's great when a photographer can plan out their shots and only take what is needed. Now of course there are times for continuous shooting, but whats the harm in planning a shot...none. Now me on the other hand..no, I don't have the patience to plan a shot and only take the real important shots. lol I shoot like crazy.
