Which would you buy: Sony NEX 7 or Canon PowerShot G1 X?

I'm so impressed with both of these cameras and can't seem to make up my mind. Which would you buy if you wanted something smaller to carry around with you?

As a lil buddy for my DSLR I'd go with the Canon. But as a one-and-only camera I'd choose the NEX-7.

Both look to be really nice cameras. If being compact was the priority I'd go with the Canon. If high ISO image quality was the priority I'd go with the Sony, although I'd also look into the NEX-5N as it's cheaper than the 7, and is supposed to have even better high ISO quality.

To get a similar range of zoom with the NEX would require carrying several lenses, and while they aren't huge the NEX lenses aren't all that small either. The normal and portrait length primes are still as large as the standard zoom. I'm using a NEX-3, and while it takes up about half the room of my DSLRs, it's not exactly a pocket camera.

I think that new Canon is pretty sweet, I think I would be leaning in that direction

Tough call, almost two completely different cameras. If I had to pick, I would go with the Canon

Depends. Do you want a variable aperture 4x zoom lens or interchangeable lenses on a larger sensor?

Both are nice cameras. I would probably go with Canon, but in the end it is up to you.

My main concern with the GX1 is the slow zoom lens that you 1) can't change and 2) must zoom with the annoying p&s style zoom toggle.

However, it does appear to be smaller than the NEX-7 with a slow zoom lens attached. With the NEX-7 you can zoom by twisting a dial on the lens, which is really nice. And you can swap that lens out for a prime lens (which still won't be super small, but it will be fast.)

And it's still smaller than a typical DSLR.

Did you happen to see the asking prices on the NEX 7's on ebay recently? $3000!

Both are pretty sweet, but I think I'd go with the NEX

I gotta say, I'd go for the Fuji X Pro-1 (depending on reviews). ;) Or the S100 if I wanted something small.
