Question about lenses and lower F/stops in some and not larger focal lengths

13 years 3 months ago #19750 by HawaiiGuy
Why is it that you can only find f/1.4 stop lenses in a few focal lengths - 50mm and 85mm. The only 200mm+ that I know is under is the f/2 200mm from Nikon. Why isn't there any 200mm or 300mm f/1.4?

Or did I over look these in my searches?

Canon has a 200mm f/2.0 for $5500 and Nikon has a new 200mm f/2.0 for $6000. Soooooo much glass to pass through.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Its probably down to cost, the big camera makers would only invest in something they are sure will sell, some of the prices on these f1.4/f2.8 lenses is crazy :cheer: :P :cheer:

The size of the front elements would have to be very large in order to have those apertures. Not an east puppy to carry around

As glass making technology get better and and less light is absorbed by the elements, faster lenses will evolve. Then the price will begin to come down (little by little).

The depth of field (DOF) would be so incredibly small on a 300mm wide open @ 1.4 that it would nearly make it unusable on anything within 20 feet. People would buy it though, mainly as a status symbol.

It is what it is.
