What is the best lens for shooting football?

I have tried taking pictures with my 18-55 kit lens I got with my Sony, however as you guessed it, the photos are not that close to the players. They look more like landscape photos with people in it. lol What kind of lens should I buy to get close up and personal with the players?

I use a Canon 70-200mm f/4 L during day ; and a Sigma HSX f/2.8 70-200mm for night. Both will give reach if you are on the sidelines.

If you look at the photographers on the sidelines. They normally have at least 2 cameras. One with a shorter zoom & the other a longer telephoto zoom so they can capture the action no matter where the action is, near or far...If you are in the stands, you will need at least a 300mm lens & then you will find yourself cropping shots in post...

Pro's usually use a mix of 70-200 f/2.8, 300 f/2.8, and 400 f/2.8.
