Sekonic 308 for me. Its done everything I've asked it to so far ..... probably grow out of it in a couple of years.

It is what it is.

I have a Sekonic 508. It does incident, spot 9 1-5 degrees, and also studio light which I have never used. It's not new, but must be available used. Probably much less that the first guys meter.

I don't use a light meter. Although I've been thinking of getting one.

I don't use it as much unless it's a challenging lighting situation or one I haven't experienced before. I use the Minolta the most for portraits but most of my hockey work is done with the same camera settings that I use weekly

How easy are these to use out of the box?

While I have used both, I prefer an incident meter to a reflective model...The big problem with the incident, for those who are unfamiliar, is that you stand at your subject & measure the light falling upon your subject, which isn't always possible. Reflective meters measure the light being reflected off of your subject. This is the type that all cameras have. Incident meters are normally always used in studio situations

How easy it that to pick up and use?

All light meters are really pretty simple to use. You key in the ISO you have set in your camera, press a button to take the reading, & then use a scale to see the available aperture/shutter speed combinations that you can utilize...
