GigaPan EPIC Pro for landscape photography?

I just found this device. Very interesting. Anyone understand how this works? How does this differ from taking panoramic photos with just your camera mounted on your tripod taking shots and over lapping them 15% over each other?

Takes them roboticly, vertical and horizontal.
www.gigapan.com/cms/shop/store

From the site
"Simply attach your camera to it, then the EPIC directs you through the steps to capture a gigapixel image. Set the upper left and lower right corners of your panorama and the EPIC works out how many photos your camera will need to take, hundreds or even thousands, automatically organizes them into rows or columns. The robotic arm clicks away capturing amazing detail in a short amount of time"

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Interesting, so how is this different from just positioning your camera and over lapping the shots?

It's automated and probably more precise.

:agree: This can shoot thousands of images both horizontally and vertically. I can't imagine keeping track of both directions.

I found this on the Gigapan site. It's pretty informative and demonstrates the gigapan pro in action.
