How to photograph watches without getting glare?

12 years 3 weeks ago #221988 by Boydster
I have 38 watches I need to take photos of and I'm getting glares or the dials are getting washed out with the light from my flash. Is there a trick to this that you can help me out with? This is for a private collector and his scrap book of his collection, which means these photos really need to be spot on for print.

Thank you so much for help

You need a light tent to diffuse the light then you take a nice dead pan shot. You can buy one or make one easily enough.

:agree: :agree:

You will not be judged as a photographer by the pictures you take, but by the pictures you show.

I don't know if you want to go thru the effort there are 2 things professional photographers do when they do watch shoots.

(1) you can remove the crystal and do the shoot.

(2) you can take 2 exposures of the watch. 1 for the watch and 1 for the dial and combine the 2 images in photoshop.

Study up on the "family of angles" to understand how to set up lighting to avoid glare.
