Anyone happen to know what are the requirements for photographers with NTSB? Any special experience or degree needed?

I would expect that they require some forensic background. not to mention training in things like the evidentiary process (because photographs are evidence). Would probably require background checks, security clearance, fingerprinting, etc. I would assume though that this is handled by the actual investigators... Having to walk someone around and point at things to photograph doesnt make much sense... Which would be required unless the photographer was experienced with the forensic analysis of the situation. Could you walk up to a plane crash and know exactly what needs to be documented? or perhaps a light rail train derailment in a city? do you understand fully the potential causes of a plane crash... why that mark on the aileron is potentially significant to the investigation? the people that do these things have years of experience and understanding flight characteristics, engines, etc. Im using plane crashes as an example... but same goes for other issues they have jurisdiction over. It makes much more sense for someone to have experience with this to do the photography...

It would be the same as a crime scene investigator, except that you are photographing wreckage. The training would be in giving you an eye for the details of that subject, which means noticing things that most people would not see.

I believe we have established that these are not full time photographers. Photography is simply an aspect of their employment. The main purpose of their employment is investigative services. So are you asking what NTSB investigators get paid? In that you can probably find that information on their website, As they are federal employees, much like the military or federal police forces, they usually have specified rates based on performance and years experience.
