Street photography and model release forms

So how exactly does this work, if you are out taking photos of people on the street and you get home and realize you have a winner, I mean a really good shot that you want to submit to a magazine. You don't have a model release form from that random person, so what now?

I can't see all street photographers getting everyone to sign a model release form?

It depends on usage, if it's for editorial use generally there may not be a need for a release - it probably depends on how a magazine would use it. Usually a release is needed for retail or commercial use.

ASMP is one professional organization that has 'pocket' release forms for a photographer to carry with them. It seems like part of street photography would be learning about how to approach people, so if there's an expectation that you may want to use a photo of them you could ask their permission. Some of the pro photographers organizations offer guidelines or suggestions.

Are you talking about the person on the street?
