Bear kills photographer

Just saw this on CNN with headline catching my attention: "Hiker photographs bear just before fatal grizzly attack"

www.cnn.com/2012/08/26/us/alaska-bear-at...index.html?hpt=hp_t2

What a crummy way to go, RIP. Wild life photographers, what are you bringing with you for weapons when out in bear country? I'd bring a shot gun!

When I was in Arizona my .45. I dont believe there are bears here in SC or in this part. The bear spray works pretty good though, so maybe I should get some of that.

If i'm photographing bears, it's probably going to be with a 600mm lens with extenders on it, and i'm going be extremely far away.

You're in their territory, so you play by their rules.

Sad the shooter lost his life though.

I'd think a shotgun would just make him mad.

I'd bring my ninja swords... faster...

I don't shoot bears. With cameras or otherwise. Best to let the beasts be. Ever seen Grizzly Man?

To be fair on the bear from whaat I understand of reading the various news sources this 'photographer' was shooting within 50m of the bear, so the question has to be asked is it really a surprise.

Any wildlife photographer should know their subject and keep themselves safe, if your going to ignore the warnings around you and keep a safe distance, this almost smells of darwinism to try and shoot a wild bear that close!

The dead guy is an example of Darwinism. Too close, too alone, too unarmed, too stupid and now too dead. Shotguns, and even .45s won't get it done. These bears are big, strong, can outrun a quarter horse, and if you are in their territory, you take your chances. Its a shame they had to kill the bear after the fact.....

Why so serious?

Yeah they failed to mention that in the CNN article. Darwin wins again. I am sorry for his family, but you have to be careful when out in Wilderness Areas. They are very dangerous places as it is, and if you have no skills/knowledge of those environments deadly. I have been bumping around the Arizona back country for over 30 years with only 3 incidents where I had to kill because of rabid animals, now I have seen many bears, badgers, Javelina/wild pigs, and mountain lions, but never had a problem because I kept the distance. Bear attacks are not that common and more people are killed by Bison at the parks that have them. It seems people do not realize that they are extremely aggressive animals, and get killed trying to get close ups, or to pet them.

This all brings to mind the movie "The Darwin Awards" one of the funniest commentaries on the topic of "just how stupid..."

Seems like he was dangerously close and sadly, made a terrible mistake in judgement getting that close. Must be awful for his friends and family knowing how he died.

I mean no disrespect to the photographer, but who in their right mind goes out to shoot a bear with a 50mm lens? Maybe tack on a "0" to that and have a 500mm lens, but 50mm? I hate taking photos of people with a 50mm, let alone a grizzly bear!
