How to photography a white car?

11 years 2 months ago #275270 by Gene.Culley
I've been trying to take a photo of my sisters white car and all the photos keep coming out like an off white and not the true frosty white it is? I have the white balance set to Auto. I have tried other white balance settings and the car still doesn't come out frosty white.

Would someone please tell me how to get the frost whites to look frost white?

Thank you

Don't know what you mean by "frost white." Posting an example would help. However, without seeing the image, it sounds like it could be more of an exposure error than a white balance problem. Sounds like you're metering the white car. If so, it's going to appear gray, not white.

Open up a stop ... either manually or by using exposure compensation. Or, put a gray card in the scene (in the same light as the car) and meter that.

What is the lighting situation?

You don't mention post processing either. When using auto WB, post becomes more than key. As mentioned, have you attempted a gray card during an exposure?

Why so serious?

Honestly I wouldn't worry about any additional adjustments in camera when you can make the changes pretty quickly in Lightroom or Photoshop.

Here are the ideas that come to my mind:

#1, Shoot in RAW, get the WB perfect in post.
#2, try overexposing - maybe the camera is metering the white car somewhat the same as snow?
#3, What metering mode are you using? Try changing that up and see what you get. I'm guessing spot metering on the car might be good, but I don't use spot metering much so I might be wrong...
