Would you ever consider being a Walmart photographer?

How much would it take for you to take a job as a Walmart photographer? Would doing so permanently down grade your reputation as a photographer? A few photographer friends and I had a cheerful discussion about this over some coffee this morning.

Let's hear your response.

Canon 7D & 1D MK III, Canon 10-22mm, 16-35mm f2.8L II, 24-70mm f2.8L, 70-200mm f2.8L IS, 300mm f2.8L IS, 200mm f2L IS, 50mm f1.4, 50mm f1.2L, 85mm f1.

I do not know if that is really considered a pro gig, more like a salesman, and button pusher. They have defined formulas you must follow, which are like the good old Olan Mills studios. Also that would not be your only duty, clean up on aisle 5. Me I would not do it simply because I am not a sales type of person.

If I needed the job and had the interest I would do it. Its an honest job and there is a market for the product. There are 1000's of people who have limited budgets...

You will not be judged as a photographer by the pictures you take, but by the pictures you show.

Despite the reputation of Wal-Mart overall, the photo studio is basically independent. Working there is basic portrait work with little creativity. That said, it does provide some pro experience in lighting and poses and understanding the economy, most employers would consider it a negative.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Maybe - being a Wallyworld Pro would bring in needed income that I didn't have so as a fill in job it might not be a bad gig

I'm sure it would be entertaining and I'd have some stories to share, but I would have to say NO.

I think I'd rather be a greeter. Which is to say, no, never.
