Wide Angle Lens - Brand and Rent Vrs Buy

11 years 1 month ago #278455 by JudyK
I posted last week about taking a road trip in early April through what is said to be one of the best wild flowers routes in Texas, Dallas to Fredericksburg.

I watched a video on PhotographyTalk about using a wide angle lens and then talked to a co-worker that is an advance amateur. He recommended that I rent a wide angle lens vrs purchaing, due to the price to purchase, try before you buy thinking.

He recommended a Tokina, a specific one I can't remember, this was days ago and I have not had time to get online to consult with you guys. What do you say, is it worth trying one out? If so, what are the recommendations for my Canon Rebel 350 and do you agree with renting idea. Does anyone have any experience with renting lenses or equipment in general and if so a recommended vendor?

Looking forward to the wealth of information that I get to benefit from due to your experience.

Thanks, have a great day!!

Judy

Crop sensor. Any lens will do.

If you only have a short-term need, and are unsure about what you're doing, then renting makes great sense. Also, if you're unsure of the brand, renting let's you try out the product without making a huge commitment.

I'm happy with the Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 that I got for my Canon. I got it expecting to use it for scenic panoramas, but have ended up using it a whole lot more for close quarter situations. Where it's not possible to back up any more. Another thread that may help -

As for renting, may be a good idea. UWA lenses are not everybody's cup of tea.

I concur with KCook, plus I have the same WA lens. There is no "perfect" WA lens. They all have faults. whether or not you can live with those faults (distortion, CA etc) is something only you can decide ..As Gary said, look into renting one & see if it fits your shooting style...

I'm thinking along the same lines, that a wide angle could be more useful for subjects that are in close, a telephoto can help you capture a subject that's farther away. If you rent you'll be able to find out how much you actually end up using it.

I think with videos and articles there are varying opinions that aren't necessarily right or wrong, just different. It helps I think the more you read and watch to figure out which suggestions work best for you.

This is an excellent lens, and another option would be a Sigma 10-20mm if you want to go with off brand. Both of these will be much less than Canon wide angle.

Thank you all for the information. It will definitely be a rental and I guess what brand depends on pricing. I will do some comparisons as to purchasing then decide. I sure don't want to rent one and love it to then find out that it is out of reach for my budget.

You have narrowed the list down quite a bit.

Kelly, thank you for the link, I will go to it as soon as I get some time. I need to because I do not understand all that a wide angle lens can do.

I Hope you all a great Easter Holiday, mine was extremely busy gut great as well.

Do you have any camera stores local to you? Some small stores if you have good relationship and if you buy from them, might have loaner for you to try out.
