Teleconverters degrade image quality?

Will even the smaller teleconverters degrade image quality? Or is it just the 1.7x and 2x?

Depends on the quality of the converter. Cheap is not good when it comes to these things. Arthur Morris uses them a lot, but they are not the 100 buck versions.

Go with a 1.4 or 1.7x and you should be OK

Talking Nikon, 1.4 won't make much of a difference. x1.7 you can see the difference but if you start with good glass (70-200 2.8 VRII for example) the quality will still be fine.

When I shot Nikon I used that combo (70-200 and x1.7) and it was fine mostly.

:agree: 1.7x is really the way to go. 1.4x will give you same zoom effect as a crop sensor camera would have.

Canon 5D Mark II, 30D, 40D, 50 1.2L, 16-35 2.8L Mark II, 24-105 4L IS, 24-70 2.8L, 70-200 2.8L IS, 85 1.8, 4 x 580 EX(II)

I use a 1.7 TC on my af-s 300 f/4 quite a lot, and it performs well. The only downside is the loss of light, and a high ISO camera really comes in handy with the combo. ...Make sure you buy a QUALITY TC, like mentioned above...don't go cheap!..... ;)

Edit: Also, see the reviews on the "newest" Nikon 2.0 TC, its getting very positive feedback, but it also costs a chunk of change..... :(

Why so serious?

A top-notch nature photographer told me the new
Canon 2x EF Extender III (Teleconverter) is superb. He was not impressed by the II.
Costs $499 but on special right now at $449.

Check out his work.
