If you had the choice: Natural lighting or Studio lighting?

A close friend and I were just talking earlier about my new lens I want to get (Sigma 150mm f/2.8) and portrait lighting and what we both preferred. Myself I would be happy with natural lighting all day and night if I could get away with it. My friend always uses her flash and strobes day or night. For me, the natural lighting just looks more... well natural!

if you had the choice, which would you prefer?

I would spend the $$ on studio gear. Bokeh is not my passion. I don't think it looks natural :duel:

I prefer natural light mostly because I'm lazy. However, someone that uses artificial flash that knows what they're doing, you won't even notice the "non" natural effect. Viewing photos online, try to examine the exif (if available) and you'll surprise yourself at how often flash is used and you don't know it. Subtlety is the word.... ;)

Why so serious?

In general, based on everything I've read, learned and heard (from pros) when it comes to portrait photography the most important thing is that the face can be seen. Adding fill flash to accomplish that goal is a Good Thing, and leads to happier customers. It's sort of expected now.

I started out trying to make adjustments in PP to brighten faces, but it's just not as successful. I have a long way to go, but I'm learning.

 :agree:
Yeah I am a lazy one as well. My preference has always been natural lighting. But if the shot calls for it I will reluctantly use a flash. I would rather setup a reflector, or a diffuser to modify the natural lighting over a flash. You can really do a lot with them, and the best part is they are easy to build. As said subtlety is the key. Now when I had my old Speed Graflex there was no such thing as soft lighting with it. Which I actually liked for the effect I was going for with it, which was the old crime scene type photos when I shot the Punk scene.
