Lens hoods and pop up flashes

Did camera makers even think this through? The only lens I can use with my popup flash without a shadow in my photo is my 50mm. Seems like a silly mistake or over look if you ask me. Why not build the flash to go up higher, so it get's around most lenses?

That's their plan, to get you annoyed and forced to go out and buy off camera flashes

Or simply remove the lens hood?

Why so serious?

Not adequate. With longer lenses like an 18-200 trying to do an interior shot, you're going to get a shadow. The solution is a flash unit, of course.

I would think of this a little differently. I'd say it's just another reason that pop-up flashes suck. Even without a large lens or a hood blocking the light, you get much better results from a speedlight. Even if it's mounted on the camera but bounced instead of pointed directly at your subject, the difference can be huge.

Popup flashes are nearly worthless if you ask me. Would rather manufactures just keep them off the camera and reduce the manufacturing cost from the sale price of the camera.

Not worthless, and lens length won't matter too much. The flash needs to me modified, or bounced. Most don't use a dedicated speedlight alone, usually some kind of diffuser or directional bouncer. Search "light scoop" on Amazon, B&H or Adorama for some alternatives.... ;)

:agree:
Also they are useful as trigger flashes for off camera speed lights. For Nikon it is how the Commander Mode works. Which is convenient if you do not want to carry extra gadgets somewhere remote.

As a 1Dx owner... "what's a pop up flash?"
