Program mode is good for?

I'm sorry, but how is this different from auto mode? I get how it works from a high level, but never really understood the purpose? Is this even used by many?

The simple answer to your question is "not much". While Auto turns your powerful DSLR into a P&S, which doesn't
permit any exposure control, Program affords some choice , such as whether the camera will use a high shutter sped within the exposure limits it sets. But, why wouldn't one use Aperture or Shutter priority, which give much more control, or Manual (my usual choice), which gives you complete control over all the image parameters? It's a puzzlement...

Program mode is go for - My husband. He uses my camera and it's always in Program when I pick it up again.

Good link effron. I have never understood what the difference was either. I started out with digital using mostly P. If I want to blur a background I'd go to apeturer priority. Stop action, shutter priority. I used film for a lot of years before that so knew about how to get where I wanted. My film cameras don't have those thing's. never knew you could change shutter or aperture in anyway in priority. It really helps that the guy doing it was really great at explaining it.

Now a question. If you want short depth of field. Why go to aperture priority when you can change it in P? Won't you get the same speed either way? Good link!

It does work in Program mode, as well as Aperture priority. But the number of "shift" clicks to get to full aperture may be a pain. Of course this depends on the AE programming for the particular camera, and even more on the light level. With all of the cameras I have tried Program mode on, in low light they immediately go to full aperture.

I only use aperture priority and manual mode
