Does the term 'Tog' get under your skin?

10 years 6 months ago #298393 by Joan Barnes
I attended a photo walk yesterday and there was one photographer that kept using the term "Tog" and another photographer got really offended with the continued use of it and confronted the guy about it. After he confronted the guy who was using "Tog", I think a couple of his friends jumped in and started using the term "Snapper" just to get under the one guys skin.

Personally I prefer to use the term "photographer" and find Tog and Snapper just lazy short cuts. Not trying to split hairs, but the terms do seem that way.

How do you feel about these terms?

I would not mind it in a joky way, but as constant use...
It sounds smug.

My fingers get lazy typing, so I sometimes use "photog" in a message. But I have not used any of those in speech.

In Australia the term "Togs" can refer to a swimsuit. So next time someone says: "I'm a great tog", you should ask them if they like swimming.

Personally I've not heard the term used much. Sounds stupid to me.

Sounds to ghetto slang for me.

Just another term that degrades the English language if you want me 2 cents.

To much of a short cut for me. It does sound lazy. I'll stick with photographer

It doesn't bother me and it isn't a word that I use myself.

It took me reading your entire post to understand what "Tog" meant. I'd have just been incredibly confused. I've never heard it before.

I do the same thing with British slang. I'm American, but I watch a lot of British media and not all words cross over so well. It's fun to infuriate people with my knowledge of British slang.

To me it sounds and reads as asinine. Don't care for it at all. Don't care for "photog" either.

The English language is a whore of a language, and is not stagnant like other true languages. It was developed as a trade language so that people could speak to each other from different areas. We add more words every year to it, and have adapted words from all parts of the world into it. So using the word tog is not any form of degradation to it, it is merely how it works, and has been working for centuries. What I consider to be more degrading is when people mispronounce words out of habit, such as using the word ax, for ask, as an example.

I do not have a problem with others as well using it. I have heard it used since I was a young pup, it is merely slang. I will use it in forums at times, but not in speaking. The US variation of it actually meant clothing in general as opposed to the swimwear example Adrian used.

Togs are clothes. I don't mind photogs but would prefer to be referred to as That Grand and Master Photographer .
