What defines a successful photograph in your world?

10 years 5 months ago #311095 by Jackman
I really hope I can express the question that is rolling around in my head right now. When you photograph something, how are you defining the success of that photo? Do you have a mental check list that when completed for each photo, you then determine success and a spot in your portfolio? I would like to learn more about what others factor into each photograph and the architecture behind their photography.

For me it is whether I got the shot I was going for. Or finally since I have a habit of going back to place to shoot till I get that right photo for that subject. Some subjects take years to get that money shot of, this is true of landscapes for me. I always know there is that right shot for a place, and I am always trying to get it. Sometimes it is even a couple of shots.

For me a successful shot is a shot I want to show others. That's it. I don't really have a mental checklist of what's required for me to want to share, but when I have the urge to post it online or show the preview screen to whoever is with me I know that shot was successful. When it comes to other's work? That's far too subjective to really put into words.

Hmmmm... Good question. I would have to say a photo that ends up on my wall!

Canon 5D Mark II | Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM | Canon 35L | Sigma 85 1.4 | Helios 44M-6 58mm(M42) | Zeiss 50mm 1.4 (C/Y) | Canon 135L | (2) 430EX II

I don't over think it these days. If it looks good, I'll sometimes post it for critique, but still take that with a grain of salt. Its also good to be in the right frame of mind when viewing. Example, a couple years ago, I shot a "new fallen snow" picture, I didn't cull it but I was NOT impressed. The weather had turned bad, and so did my mood. I reopened the file and processed in July and its now printed and hanging on my wall as one of my favorites.....

Why so serious?

Well for me, it's just all about what pushes the right buttons. If it looks good, it's a winner. Like already said, I don't pay much attention to defining photos as success or failures. Did I get out of the house? Did I get some experience in? Did I enjoy myself with my photography? That's my measurement of success.

No real 'checklist' per se, but the photo must be well-focused (unless the lack of focus was on purpose), and obey or defy (but not ignore) 'rules' of composition. For my own photos, also how well it conveys any intended message or feeling. For somebody else's photos, the uniqueness of the shot, the craft applied to it. If I sound like I know what I'm talking about, apologies, for I continue to wonder what makes one photo worthless and another priceless if the above criteria are met (or defied).

Judging based on comments we can pretty much all agree it's really subjective, there's no checklist, but we know it when we see it. :)

Its all about the photos taken. If the photo is liked by everyone and if it is heart touching then only we can say that the photographer is successful one. The photo should be such that it will describe completely about the scene behind it. It should be such that people will love to see it again and again.

Thanks

:agree: it's so opinionated and loaded question, I say if it works for you, then it's a success
