Having a camera with dual memory slots for means of backup?

10 years 3 months ago #337187 by Tony Imaging
Would you consider having a camera body that had dual memory card slots important for making backups while you shooting a wedding for example?  I have a Nikon D700 and of course has just one slot for compact flash card.  I met another photographer today who made it sound like I wasn't doing my clients justice because I was using a camera that wasn't making backups on the fly via dual cards.  I have never had a card fail and although this does make sense to some degree, I just can't justify getting a completely new camera for this sole reason.  I don't know, I could be wrong.  How I see it, regardless what cameras are on the market today, a few years ago, the D700 was hot stuff and what many pros used.

The D700 is still a hot camera. Ignore the snob. I also shoot a D800 and my poor old, single slot D700 is NOT for sale......;)

Why so serious?

I shoot dual cards backing up to the second card. But I've never had a card fail... BUT If I do, I have the backup. :)

Up to you if it's worth the small risk.

Some people just say the dumbest things.    That doesn't make sense.

Another pet peeve of mine is people who let gear go to their heads.  The D700 is a great camera, anyone that tells you different is full of that brown stuff.  And that's being said by a Canon owner (that's me)!  Sure having dual slots is nice to have, if you don't have it, it means absolutely nothing against your skills.

Well, you are right to an extent that you can't buy a new Camera for just this reason. Probably because you have never been in a situation where you card failed. Ask those who have experienced it. I believe that memory cards do not come with a definitive life span. They may malfunction anytime without a prior warning or a signal. Had i been at your place, I may think of buyinga camera with dual slot. It becomes so easy to backup photos simultaneously.

Start a new topic with "Who had card failures and lost their shots?"

Doing digital for 7 years and never had any problems where I lost images with my CF cards.
