Will using just this one filter be all I need to create B&W images from my camera?

Get a cheap one and see.  My bet is that dropping the blue and green channels prior to  applying a B&W preset in post processing will be just as good, if not better.

This is the gospel. Save your money and do it in post, where you have more control and an ability to change your mind.....;)

Why so serious?

:agree:  I use to be all into filters, these days, if Photoshop will do the job for me.  Then that is the path I'm after.

I will parrot what has been said. Shoot in color and then convert in post. When you use the color channels you get more control. Though you could shoot with the filter for effect, and then convert.

Speaking of filters, I wonder when Photoshop will have a polarizer filter that duplicates what a real one does, but then again if it's a reflection of a cars window that disappears, photoshop wouldn't know what was behind it.  Making the polarized filter the last one standing.

Good to know about the B&W filters, I was looking at these myself.  Good post and tips.

I've used red filters when shooting B&W film; that blocks blue light and enhances red. When I've shot a color digital image and wanted a B&W version I remove color (black and white is basically the absence of color).

Usually I think about the subject or scene and if there's some nice light and dark that will work well in black and white; I find on a sunny day I'm likely to get better contrast. A red filter can enhance that. They're also often used with infrared film.
