The cure to chimping

10 years 2 months ago #350501 by Janos
I have had a bad habit (if you want to call it as one) of constantly checking my exposure after each shot because I had the display set to show review with details.  I have moved to normal viewing and no details and I'm happy!  Feels like I'm missing something as there is a void in my picture work flow!  Ahhhhhhhhhh

The only time I really chimp it is when I am adjusting my flash, or for it. When I get a new camera I always turn off the auto review it always annoyed me anyhow when I would see it come up after a shot. That and it eats up power.

Yeh I turn of auto review too.  I started doing it with the Fuji X-Pro1 because the instant review thingy would make it harder to get another shot off quickly (you couldn't quickly override it with a push of the shutter button).

It makes you less Chimpy too.

I think reviewing occasionally is a good idea though, you don't want to be shooting away and realise later you've taken 100 overexposed images because you forgot to bring your ISO down from 12800 from shooting indoors the night before.

Honestly, I don't look at my details till I get to my computer and photos are downloaded.

I'll also ask why. It was a suggestion on my part, but I leave my review ON all the time. I learned years ago the hard way, but I will check especially the first few shots, then occasionally. I've spun the wrong dial, hit a button in error, forgot I was using ISO 125 million, etc too many times to ignore the info......:(

I am the king of 'chimping'. I'm really checking the histogram as I did the composition in the viewfinder.  My question is why wouldn't you use the tools available to you?  As a photographer who cut my teeth back in PD (Pre-Digital) age and worried for days while the film was being developed, life is much less stressful as a chimp.

Same here.  Occasionally checking has saved me many times.

Me, I never knew that chimping was an ailment. I guess I'm a sufferer.

And I would be the queen of chimping.  I'm constantly checking my display and adjusting things on the changing light conditions.

No shame in chimping.  I do it myself, especially when the shot really counts

Wasn't me :)

Not to be the odd one here, but who came up with this term "Chimping"?  Seems like a odd sounding word for checking your settings.  Ummmm thats just me.
