Well I know it was started in the late 90 among sports pros. I have heard though that it actually started out as an acronym for the term CHeckIMagePreview hence CHIMP, then it became a word with tenses soon after. Some people love to use it in a derogatory manner, usually people who love to sound superior. Yeh I turn of auto review too. I started doing it with the Fuji X-Pro1 because the instant review thingy would make it harder to get another shot off quickly (you couldn't quickly override it with a push of the shutter button).
It makes you less Chimpy too.
I think reviewing occasionally is a good idea though, you don't want to be shooting away and realise later you've taken 100 overexposed images because you forgot to bring your ISO down from 12800 from shooting indoors the night before.
