What is your walk around zoom lens?

10 years 2 months ago #353955 by Nancy Hait
When you are just walking around and just want one lens, which do you bring with you?  I have been using my 24-70mm only because my 70-200mm is just to big and heavy.  Actually I would like a 18-200mm, can it be used on a full frame camera?  I know it's a crop sensor lens, but I can't remember if that can be used on full frame camera?

The 18-200 and 18-300 are DX lenses, yes, but much lighter than the 70-200. Some consider the image quality on the 18-200 to be only fair; I think it's pretty decent, and post-processing helps.

DX lenses can be used on FX cameras. Some of the cameras can be put into "DX mode" which means the image is just cropped. You could also just take picture, and crop yourself. At the shorter end of the range you may not lose too much around the edges.

35 1.4

I don't usually use a zoom as a walk around lens. Though if I had to pick I'd say 24-70.

The 3X kit zoom for each camera's sensor size.  Mostly for the light weight.  I could be tempted by a f/2.8 zoom.

I use my 24-70 and need to remember to switch hands often, if I forget one arm will look like Popeye's the other Olive Oils's. I love my neck strap but have never gotten to the point of trusting it with my heavy, five thousand dollar rig.  I have experimented with my 16-35 (DX) on my D800 and it actually produces a nice "cropped" image. More when we emerge from this Northeast ice age and I can get out and walk around more....

Why so serious?

When I bought my Sony A77 body last year I invested in an f1.8 50mm prime and a 55-300mm zoom 'cos I figured that should cover most if not all my needs.

However, on a whim I picked up a Sony 18-55mm zoom off Ebay for under £40. I believe this was the standard kit lens until last year. I don't know how much input the built in lens correction of the body has but I have to say the results have been as good as much more expensive lenses and it has hardly ever been off the body since!

lk around. I don't do a lot of that unless your talking about old homesteads ect. Then I like my 18-105. In the film days I used the 28-200 Sigma a lot. Never needed the longer power's though.

18-200mm is a great lens, not the quickest auto focus, but it's a still a great lens

Well I usually have either my 40, or 10.5 on. If I have a zoom on then it is either one of two kits, the 18-105, or the 19-55. I got both of those dirt cheap. I am not much for the zooms unless I know I am going somewhere that I cannot frame with my feet easily.
