Filter won't come off lens

10 years 1 month ago #360311 by One Creative Girl
I bought a Hoya polarized filter a few weeks ago from ebay seller and all was okay till I tried taking it off my lens and it won't budge.  I have tried my rubber grips that I use for in the kitchen and I can almost feel the filter coming apart.  Any ideas of how I can remove this with out destroying my filter?

Thank you in advance.

Well the rubber grip is about the best thing to use. Sounds like it is one of those with the aluminum rings which will stick. Other than the rubber grip, the only thing I would use are channel locks. I know that seems extreme, and may damage the filter, but it will get them off. The part that threads in has knurles on it so the locks will grip it. I have done this before, and just decided to not use the filter anymore because of the constant sticking. Also you can try using a soapstone if you do not want to toss the filer. You rub it on the threads before mounting, and it keeps it from sticking, but you have to do it everytime you mount it, so I never consider it worth the effort.

Joves gave some good advice, I have had similar happen and tapped on it lightly around the edges to break free as I'm turning.

Some of those less priced filters have weak rings that keep those spinning parts together.  Had this happen my first polarized filter.  The filter just fell apart and then the remaining piece came off with no problem.  Best to get a better filter, I'm speaking from experience.  ;)

Whatever you do, be careful if you decide to use a hammer:

This is why you don't buy cheap gear.  Certain things are OK to cut corners, but filters I think on a few levels, you want to buy quality.  Did you cross thread when you put it on?

Yeh I keep getting asked to go on quests.  It's really interrupting my Kung Fu.

Thank you all, sorry to say the outer ring did come off.  Is it even worth to ask how much it might cost to have Hoya fix?

Sorry to hear this, honestly I wouldn't spend the money on repairing it.  I would by another filter/brand.

So did you damage your threads on your lens?
