How long did it take for you to find your niche?

I am still at the stage in my photography of finding my exact niche. I am currently giving almost every type of photography a try, just to see what I like and what I'm good at. I haven't got too many types of photography left to go but I've been at it for about 8 months. How long did it take for all of you to find your niche, or to find where you are really comfortable in photography?

Wut niche?!?!  There are various flavors of photography that I know I am not comfortable with.  But I have never sought a niche, and do not expect to ever be limited to any niche.

Well I have been shooting for over 40 years now, and still do not have one. I think I have shot about everything, and most likely may get around to doing it all again. I am with Kelly in that it limits you if you even think that way.

Work in progress, but really it wasn't till the last couple years I have really started to focus on sports and action photography.  So for me it was about 3 years.

You might consider worrying less about your niche (aside from shooting what you enjoy) and focus on finding your voice. That's far more important, IMO.

Niche, voice, or creative eye (or other metaphors).  To me, they all are close cousins in meaning.  Bottle line have I found something I enjoy photographing more than other things and have mastered?  Nope, still on that journey.

I wouldn't say I have an exact niche that I focus on, but after 15 years or so, I had a good idea of what I really enjoyed photographing the most.

I think I have one. Dogs. I can go out and just get the right spot by what seems accident. I also learned to guess what might happen and am ready for it, I can read a dog. I really like doing old homesteads but I don't seek them out like I do dogs. I don't think being good at taking picture's means you take good picture's. Really do think there needs to be some kind of personal involvement in the subject to get really good shots. Take any subject you want and your gonna find people that take useable photo's of the subject and people that take great photo's, that is before the editing process. I believe you need to identify with the subject. How good of photo's are you gonna do of some subject you don't really care about?

I figured mine out right away... there wasn't really much experimenting with other things, I just thought portraits were more interesting and noticed that I'm not really good at anything else lol.

Fun fact:  It's pronounced "neesh", not "nitch"

I am a little bit of mercenary in this respect in that my niche is the one that pays and I enjoy at the time. I hope to have more time to just shoot for fun rather then just being about the $$$$$$$$$$$$
