music on video

If I were to put together a video using some of my photos and I add some music, would I need permission from the artist to use the song?

Would depend on how the video was being used (commercial or personal).

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

I would say that is a touchy subject. You make a video, post it on youtube, someone shares it, that person shares etc.. someone down line decides to put together a bunch of videos to sell on a CD.

Now someone is making money off of your video with your photos that you made for personal use with a song attached to the video. You did not get permission from the artist because it was personal use to show off your work. So now the person who sold the CD, does the artist come after them or you?

As for private non-posted use you'll probably be ok. Once you post it somewhere public then you may run into issues. I did something similar and got a note back from Youtube saying that the author did not approve and that the audio had been removed automatically. You can find lots of "fan" music videos on Youtube though. From what I read basically use like that (at least on Youtube) comes down to the how the artist or record label will allow. If in doubt, avoid it.

Since you're thinking of buying a mac, the mac comes with iphoto which has a really good slideshow feature and includes royalty free music (or you can create your own in garage band, a free music creation software that also comes free with every mac).

As for permission to use the song. Yes you do need it... if you plan to release it to the public in any way (including youtube). If you just want it to show to friends in your house (private viewing) and it will never be publicly displayed (I'll say it again, this INCLUDES Youtube) then you're fine, just control the distribution tightly (don't let friends get it and pass it around).
