~ In this digital age, a growing number of artists are reviving 19th century techniques to create modern photographs.

Artists & Alchemists is a feature length documentary that follows ten contemporary and renowned photographers employing antiquated photographic processes.

It appears there is no release date as of yet... Just some time 2011

I'm really looking forward to this flick.

But are the tools and techniques the answer? Just as we have woodworkers making beautiful furniture with hand tools, we have folks using power tools to make identical pieces.
Are using old techniques simply a gimmick? Or do they produce something "unique"?
Does an author write a better novel because his uses a typewriter?

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Obviously your eye and your own personal "vision" will over time create it self regardless of the format of camera.

In fairness, I would say that working in large, medium, or 35mm film does produce something unique. This is different than your comparison because the while wood working with power tools or wood working w/primitive tools, the wood is the constant and can be produced w/the same outcome (Some may argue that as well). You can use either tool and create the same effect. Same with a type writer or computer (atleast for recording purposes)... Although, if you are talking for presentational purposes, as some sort of artistic effect, aesthetically, the paper/typewriter combination will yield a different visual result. Thats how many feel about shooting film and developing/darkroom prints. It makes for a unique visual result. I'd hardly call film w/all it's processes, a gimmick.

Even shooting 35mm film, creating a scan made from the negative, and making an unfiltered print from an inkjet printer yields unique grainy results that can be a part of somebody's distinctive personal vision. Depends what you are trying to express to your viewer.
