Elusive Milkyway shots! How are you finding the Milkyway?

9 years 6 months ago #408947 by Chris Curran
Last weekend I was out nearly 5 hours: 9pm till 2am.  I couldn't find a good shot of the Milkyway.  What time is the best time to see it?  BTW if the moon is out, can you still see it?  No shots were gotten, but I had a good time.  I must say, it's been years since I have been up that late!

You have to let your eyes adjust and have a dark sky. In the southern sky you'll make out the faint band of the Milky Way, and it moves from east to west....;)

There's some amazing MW shots simply done. I did this last year in a late moonlit sky with my D700. Not great but my first effort...

I've found that pulling up your ISO will really help with bringing that milky way out of the darkness. Try to keep your shutter speed faster than 30s or so. There is a rule that better tells you the shutter speed you need to use, however I forget it. This was shot with around a 30s exposure, ISO 1600-3200 and as wide of an aperture as possible.

You need to find some dark. I.e. away from city lights. And no, the moon is not helpful. You want the moon to be down. This site is helpful for figuring out sun/moon rise/set:

The Photographer's Ephemeris

THere's a browser-based app in there somewhere.

Great!  Looks like I'm going to have a change of plans for this weekend

Now I want to try to capture some night shots!  Seriously these shots are cool.  Gary, someone on this site recommend that app a few months ago, but I haven't used it yet.  Now I have a good reason.  Thanks

Very nice to meet you!
