Networking with other photographers that are from your area?

Do you actively network with other photographers from around where you live? I was thinking it can't hurt to get a larger black book full of photographers.  You never know what might come from such relationships.  I have a friend who is a Realtor, and he never stops networking.  We met for lunch just before the holidays and he was telling me about all the referral work that he gets.  It's about 40% of his business!  He accounts this stream of business from his continuous networking with other Realtor's.

So, if it works for Realtor's, it must work for photographers too?

Same here.  I have a couple Meetup groups that I attend, and aside from those, I don't go out of my way to network with other photographers.  Don't get me wrong, if I come across one in a Starbucks or where ever, I'm a bit gregarious.  But that's it.

I am unsure if you are serious, or not.
It is to form groups through socializing that may lead to business opportunities. With some it just means to socialize in general. I do not network with anyone. I tried a Meetup group once, but found it to be more gear heads than photographers, or wannabe pros. I have tried to get some of the local amateurs to meet, and just go out shooting, but that is like pulling teeth most of the time.

All good responses.  I keep going back to this must work, when you think about how a Realtor makes their living and a Photographer, the mechanics are close.  I get it, there are less entry barriers with photography, as a result you get more fluff than you would in the realty business.  Why not try to connect yourself with a working pro's only, sort of group?

Just the occasional meetup, but as already mentioned, you get many pretentious gear heads here.
