Donating your time?

Can a photographer donate to a charity in the form of services and time?

Let's say I invoice $1000 for a photo shoot for a charity, then I donate that $1000 by doing the shoot for free. Is that possible in the United States? If I donated $1000 outright, I could write that off as a donation, would this be the same?

NO. The tax laws do not allow deductions for the value of your time. :patriot: ANy materials used and donated would probably be deductible as well as (I believe this is still true), travel expenses. Better check on that last one.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

I don't know the law itself, but I'd say get them to pay you then give the money back and get a receipt from them.

The problem with that is they would have to document what they paid you and you would be responsible for taxes. If it's over $600 they have to issue a 1099. Then the deduction would offset the income. Lots of work for nada. Ah, the US tax code.

In Canada I have received tax receipts for the value of an item when it is donated and sold (in a silent Auction). For example I have donated framed LE's signed to charity and received the sale at auction value as a tax receipt for a donation.

BTW this is a great way to introduce your services to people. I do no more than 20 of a certain print for my LE's:beerbang:

As Bay said no it is not deductable. Fact is I believe they changed the Charitable Donation Deduction as well. The last Congress thought that too many corporations were taking advantage of it. I have done shoots for local food banks and helped my friends Scout Troop with their astronomy and photography badges. I never use the charity deduction because, it never seemed right to me.
