Lens hoods purpose beyond protection?

I have a lens hood that keeps falling off.  Assuming you aren't shooting in completely crappy light, is there any other reason aside from the lens protection?

Just to keep incident light from striking the front element at odd angles causing flaring. Other than that no.

Go outside into the light and put your hand above your eyes shielding your eyes from the light. That's the effect the lens hood has. Years ago, I heard a Nikon photographer at the Nikon School and he said that was the one simple thing you could do to improve your images. I always use one for protection because I never use protective filters.

To keep light from striking your lens when you don't want it and probably a little protection for the lens also.  I do not use one but I am still learning a lot

:agree:    That ^^^ is the primary purpose of the hood and it's why I use one.  Protection is secondary.

I realize what they are for but mine are hard to get on well all the time after they have been used  a while. Had to go look, my 55-300 Nikon is threaded for filter's. Wonder why the hood's aren't made to screw into it also? I've had a couple that fall off now and then.

It's just the small plastic nub that wears down, you can put up with it.  Or I've heard of people putting putty on it to create more friction.  Personally I'd just buy a new one.

Because you might need to mount a filter. Now they could thread the outside diameter, but that would be tragic due to the threads getting bumped, and ruined when you did not have a hood on.

:agree: even if it is an off-brand like Vello for $12.50.

You can also ask "Does this hood make my lens look bigger?" :toocrazy:

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.
