Would you ever use GoFundMe for photography gear you needed?

I have a friend who is setting up a campaign to buy new photography gear.  I told him this wasn't the right way to get funds for  new gear.  He's after a Nikon D4s and 600mm lens.  So we aren't talking the basics. I don't know, for me, this doesn't sit well and I wanted to post this thread so he can see what others have to say about this.  As I told him, once you post something like that up, the internet never forgets.  So why post something like this, for gear that isn't exactly 'starter gear' or 'replacement gear'.  Who wouldn't want this gear?  Course we all would love this set up.  Asking just seems lazy to earn it like the rest of us.

How do you feel about this?

Sounds like he is part of the "gimme" generation. Rather have something given to him rather than earn it...

Some people just look for short cuts in the wrong areas.  Is he able to work?  What makes this awkward is the gear he is after is premium, top of the line gear.  Not exactly 'getting by' gear.

I had a young friend who mentioned a GoFundMe to replace a car he had wrecked. I know he didn't go through with it but was sorry he even considered it.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Well your friend should get a loud and clear message from what has been posted in this thread already.  My comment would be the same.

I am willing to bet he has no demonstrable skills. That combination is pretty specific to wildlife; I think 600mm is too long for sports?

Anyhoo, your friend is a putz. Whichever definition you prefer.

No, 600mm is the lens you use for studio portraits.

And all of the other posts in this thread so far. I keep seeing more of these frivolous Go Fund Me so I do not have to work request on Begslist all the time. They are of pretty much two veins, the sad long drawn out country music story that they need a new lung, or the I want something for nothing types. The whole problem I see with these beg sites is that they are making it difficult for those who actually have legitimate needs.
