Kodak easyShare Z915 or Olympus Stylus-7010

Right now I'm just using a borrowed camera, but my parents are going to get me one of my own for my birthday in March. We're looking at either a Kodak EasyShare Z915 or an Olympus Stylus 7010.

Any recommendations?

Office Max had the Kodak on sale here for $99.99 last week. I've seen the Olympus online receintly for about $130.00 The Olympus came with a 1 GB SD card. Not sure about the Kodak.

I personally liked the Olympus better than the Kodak, but it's a personal thing. See which one you're most comfortable with.

Thanks for the pricing info. I think we can get both of them locally for about the same price. Do you know anything more about them? What are the pros and cons of each and which is the better buy in the long run?

The Kodak's strength is its 10x optical zoom and its main weakness, in my opinion, is that it's prone to distortion and has a slow focusing time.

The Olympus has a nice 7x zoom lense and better focusing performance. However, it has a slower shot-to-shot time and I think the colors are rather bland compared to other comparably priced cameras.

The Olympus is much smaller and lighter than the Kodak and uses lithium ion batteries as compared to the standard AAs that come with the Kodak.

Unless there's some reason you absolutely have to purchase the Olympus or the Kodak, there are other cameras that are better and still in your price range. Go online and look at the Canon, Panasonic, Fuji and Nikon websites.

First, the specs:

Pros of Kodak:
- 10x zoom, a little more than Olympus's 7x zoom
- uses SD card, which is cheaper than Olympus's XD or micro SD cards

Pros of Olympus:
- Much smaller, good if you need a pocket sized camera
- Uses a self-charging lithium ION battery included, longer battery life and lower costs in the long run, over Kodak's AA size battery requirements
- Included software is MUCH better than Kodak's worthless and buggy easy-share software

My personal opinion:

Go for the Olympus. Relatively recently I was in the business of selling and repairing digital cameras. The majority of repair orders for point-and-shoot cameras were Kodak easyshare and Casio. They have a tendency to burn out their lens servo motors with in couple years. I think over-all Olympus P&S have better image quality as well.

I checked B&H to see ratings. They don't carry that Kodak and the 7010 looks discontinued (only a used for sale at B&H) replaced by the 7030 at $130.
The Olympus7030 is a 14mp with 7x zoom.
The Kodak is a 10mp with 10x zoom. Kodaks have a reputation for "eating" batteries. Don't know if this is still true. Soft focusing was mentioned in the Kodak reviews.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Interesting list. I have a Canon 3100IS in my hand right now and it seems to be a decent little camera. 12mp and 4x zoom. This one was donated by Canon USA (along with 13 others) for a program our camera club is running at an inner city community center. I have one to "test out", take some shots, and learn the workings. Fairly quick shutter for a compact.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.
