How to photograph throuh a chain link fence

9 years 1 week ago #438071 by Tim Chiang
I attend a lot of auto and motorcycle races and a big problem I have is getting a good vantage point to shoot from.  Many cases there is a chain link fence between me and a great spot.  Is there a trick to photographing through a chain link fence?

Get close to fence, shoot wide open and the subject should be a good distance away....Also, shoot through the gaps....;)

Why so serious?

Thanks, these days it can't hurt to post a question, you never know if someone has some sort of secret sauce that might work better!

What Ernest said is really the only way to shoot thru a fence. Light rays will bend around the links & still give you an image to work with.

A long focal length helps as well. Wide angles don't work as well.

I have a 4' latter in my truck and when I visit one of these events, I bring that with me.  That will usually get me where I can shoot above the fence.

I, at one time, shot Little League games for an outfit. I was always inside the fence .... Just had to be careful of balls coming my way...
