How much should i charge for baby shower pictures?

I'm thinking I should charge by the hour, however they asked for a flat rate.  I don't even know how long I'll be there.

Speaking of which, what do you do/say when client wants flat rate when you normally charge by the hour?

If she wants a flat rate, ask her how many hours she will need you.  Otherwise if unknown, give her scenarios.  If 3 hours, then $.  If 5 hours, then $$.  And break down what each 15 overage too.

Get on http://asmp.org or PPA if you're going to be in business as a photographer to learn what to do. You should have that info. available for prospective clients before they book your services as a photographer. You don't want to get into situations where someone's trying to get as much as they can (additional time) for the price. Be clear so they know what to expect about how much time you are being booked for.

My Daughter in Law just had a baby shower yesterday... They typically last a few hours. Change accordingly. Needless to say I did my Daughter in  Law's at no charge...

What's the big deal?  Just charge what ever your normal hourly rate is.  If they want to hire you, they'll go along with it.

Baby showers are fun to photograph.  Celebration for the upcoming life to join the world.  I personally charge by the hour with a 3 hour minimum.  After that I charge per hour.
