Reconditioning portrait frames

7 years 2 months ago #516623 by Vincent
I have some old wood frames that I would like to recondition, but give a distressed look.  How can this be done?  Would you sand down or take a wired brush?  Those are some of the answers I found in Google, but it seems like it wouldn't look natural to me.

Got me, would like to get help first.  Let me know anything you can share.  Thank you.

You might want to check with Home Depot, they have paint kits that will clone that sort of distress look you are after.

Both would do the job. It is a matter of strategic placement of that type of wear. Also you could use different chisels by pressing them against the wood to look like nicks. The darken the nicks with a stain. But I would do that just enough for character. Also if the frame has some relief work in it you might try dabbing some paint in it to appear as though it had been painted at one time, but not totally cleaned out.

Youtube tutorials will take you a long way. Really, just find one that has the sort of aesthetic you're looking for and have a watch – this one from Lowes might be a good place to start.
